Home-Connect brings fibre internet to SA schools for Youth Month

Youth Month, and specifically Youth Day, pays tribute to the people and students who lost their lives during the 1976 uprising. One of the United Nations’ Development Goals is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all South Africans.

In line with this, local Internet Solutions Provider Home-Connect has committed to providing several schools in South Africa with internet connection at no cost. Home-Connect CEO Jonathan Mason says the company is excited and humbled to be able to equip local schools and communities with super-fast internet connectivity at no extra cost.

“We want to equip the youth and be part of something great, gone are the days of slow internet, children need the internet and we are bringing that tool of education to them,” said Mason.

The schools are receiving free uncapped and unshaped fibre internet as part of a 2-year sponsorship that is made possible thanks to Home-Connect’s partnership with Open Access Fibre Network Operator, Vumatel, which installs Fibre infrastructure in South Africa.

Vumatel has several ISPs within their network, giving customers within their geography the ability to sign up for FTTH (Fibre to the home) Internet services. Vumatel has established itself as a truly open access Fibre Network Operator (FNO) and in 2016, the company launched a Fibre Build project in Johannesburg which enables ISPs to provide schools with 1 Gbps Internet Fibre.

“Home-Connect commends Vumatel for laying the foundations to bring internet connectivity to the future leaders of our country – our youth. Access to information via the internet is becoming a basic human right and private sector initiatives such as these will continue to assist South African government in meeting their goals. Education is one of the most powerful and proven vehicles for sustainable development and we look forward to giving back to the community by empowering South Africa’s youth in this way in the future,” concludes Mason.
